At the beginning of the twentieth century the traditional market was held in the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a with market stalls and awnings distributed in the available space, mostly consisting of meat, fruit and vegetable vendors from the town or producers near Tomelloso.<\/p>

There were several attempts since 1904 for the construction of a municipal market, the first attempt had as a possible location the corner of San Roque and Don Sergio streets, the second proposal was located on part of the site of the Posada de los Portales and on a third occasion the P\u00f3sito was defined in Do\u00f1a Crisanta street. but in none of these locations was any work carried out.<\/p>

Finally, in the 30s, Veracruz Street was selected as the definitive location and in 1932 it was inaugurated, moving all the merchants to its facilities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The building was distributed over two floors: the ground floor with access by stairs with two opposite entrances and the basement. The ground floor was dedicated to the stalls that mainly sold meat products, eggs and greengrocers. In the basement were the stalls dedicated to the sale of vegetables and fishmongers. <\/p>

The Abastos market enjoyed great popularity and was the main food supply site for the town. Around the area occupied by the Mercado de Abastos, there were also a large number of very popular establishments such as a cheese shop, a haberdashery, churrer\u00edas and small bars. In addition, street market stalls were set up in the square in front of the market on Mondays and Wednesdays. <\/p>

But due to the appearance of large supermarkets and food stores in the 90s, the Market and the surrounding areas gradually lost influx of public until it was finally closed in October 2014, leaving a very impoverished and abandoned area.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In December 2021, the remodeling works of the old municipal market began. A project included in the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI 2020) of Tomelloso and financed by the European Regional Development Fund, with an investment of 1,180,000 euros. <\/p>\n

Currently, the Tomelloso Food Market is a modern and functional space that wants to have restaurant and food stalls, such as bakeries, fishmongers, butchers, greengrocers and gourmet shops.<\/p>\n

In addition, cultural activities and events will be held inside, making it a meeting point and reference for the citizens of Tomelloso.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The mural of Alfaraz that adorned the fa\u00e7ade of the market since 1992 was moved to the interior of the market for conservation.<\/p>

This mural depicts an ancient Roman market with several women carrying baskets of food, one of them with a clay pot and in the foreground a woman in front of a fresh food stall sporting voluminous red hair.<\/p>

The women depicted give the impression of walking delicately on a blue and white floor between beautiful grey columns on a pink background. The artist and creator of this mural is Miguel Dur\u00e1n-Loriga (1928 \/1997) who was a prestigious architect and designer who won the National Design Award twice in 1971 and 1979. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
